Seton Hall University upset Villanova (ranked #3 in the nation) at The Garden today during the second round of the Big East Tournament. Annex athlete, Seton Hall Prep star, Scotch Plains native Sterling Gibbs was at the center of it all and hit the game-winner as time ran out to send Seton Hall into the next round. Sterling has been training with Tim Laffey for much of his career and today was an example of how all that hard work translates into clutch performances like this one. Yahoo! Sports column The Dagger described the scenario well: “Gibbs wasn’t having it. With just over three seconds remaining, the sophomore guard shook Hilliard at the top of the key and rattled home a jumper as time expired, sending the Seton Hall fans into hysterics and the Villanova fans that composed much of …

/ Annex athlete Matt Daley poised for great future

The Newark Star-Ledger recently profiled Yankees’ pitcher Matt Daley, who has been training with Mickey Brueckner, and is ready to make an impact in the Yankees’ rotation. Columnist Dave D’Alessandro wrote of how Matt handled the historic last mound appearance by Mariano Rivera and his steady numbers: “Anyone could appreciate how Daley handled that moment, but the thing people tend to overlook is that he has always been good at his job. He had seven appearances last September, and retired 18 of the 21 batters he faced (two hits, one HBP), struck out eight of them, and had a zero ERA across six innings. This surprises no one who has followed his career, because when Daley gets on a roll, he usually keeps rolling. As a rookie in Colorado in 2009, he had a streak of 14 scoreless outings. The …

While she has certainly helped our members improve themselves, Arianna herself has made steady personal gains since being part of our training atmosphere. “I’ve been doing CrossFit for just about a year and a half,” said Arianna. “During the school year, I stopped CrossFit for awhile and did some strength training on my own. I found The Annex (last) August and started doing CrossFit again. Since I started working at The Annex, I have increased my deadlift by 55 pounds, squat by 20 pounds and snatch by 40 pounds.” Her personal records are now a deadlift of 240, a squat of 200, a snatch of 100 and a clean and jerk of 132 pounds. She entered her first weightlifting competition recently and has gotten the bug to  participate …

/ Ihedigbo recovers to have career day

ihedigbo

The Annex’s best-known football player, James Ihedigbo of the Baltimore Ravens, had himself quite a dramatic SportsCenter highlight reel. First, there was the self-acknowledged “bone-head play” where he tipped the ball to the Bengals receiver A.J. Green on a Hail Mary, which sent the game into overtime. But as all Annex-trained athletes do, James put his mistake behind him and emerged with a career day, and, most importantly, the W, which puts the Ravens back into the playoff hunt. In overtime, with the Bengals going for it on 4th and 2, James flew out into the flat to force Giovani Bernard, who caught a short swing pass, into the hands of a swarming Ravens D to end that drive. Earlier in the day, James had two interceptions, his first and second in his NFL career. He finished with 9 tackles …
